Hidden among the desert ridges and canyons of the McDowell Mountains in Fountain Hills, the golf adventure begins at the upper mouth of a yawning canyon and descends switchback style to the valley floor. The rhythm of the game, the sequencing of the par 3’s, 4’s and 5’s, the varying degrees of difficulty and the way the golf course gently shifts direction are as much a part of the ebb and flow of the desert as are the change of seasons and the passage of clouds in the sky. The views are awe-inspiring. The solitude profound - the golfer sees no other hole then the one they are playing.
Legend Trail Golf Course
Great players and magnificent golf courses are declared legends only after they’ve withstood the test of time. However, Legend Trail achieved legendary status when it opened in 1995. Rees Jones, the youngest son of the legendary Robert Trent Jones, designed a somewhat traditional style course in a beautiful desert surrounding. "Most desert courses are so penal, but Legend Trail is not," says Rees. "The front nine is very gentle, and the back nine builds to a crescendo."
Yes, Legend Trail is a friendlier place to play desert golf, but you need your "A" game in place, especially when you get to the 16th and 17th holes, back-to-back par-5s that are far more demanding than the distance of 525 and 530 yards might indicate. Doglegs implore you to work the ball and the par 5 holes are tempting, if not always actually reachable. From the tips, Legend Trail plays 6800 yards with a lion’s share of shot-making options. The landing areas and hazards at several holes are not always visible. Precipices, washes, and existing contours create natural elevation. Legend Trail is a shot maker’s course that requires a full game and heads up course management.
Troon North Golf Club
There are few places in golf where nature and man have collaborated with such striking success. Here, nature supplied the setting against the backdrop of Pinnacle Peak, panoramic views of North Scottsdale, the McDowell Mountains and the lush desert. Man, as directed by designers Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, organized the massive boulder configurations that surround the tees and frame the greens and provided stylish landscaping that enhances the natural terrain. The result is high desert drama of the first order. When you add the thoroughly professional service from every level of the staff and course conditions that set the standard for the Valley, you’ve got an absolute “must play.”
We-Ko-Pa Golf Club, Cholla
Opened in December 2001, We-Ko-Pa Golf Club, Saguaro is the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation’s stunning new golf course covering almost 500 acres of natural desert landscape. Featuring an authentic tribute to the local Yavapai tribe, We-Ko-Pa pays homage to the original dwellers of the land. Located on Native American land in Fountain Hills, the name We-Ko-Pa, means Four Peaks Mountain, which is inspired by the surrounding mountains appropriately called the Four Peaks that rise to an elevation of over 7,000 feet, and is located just thirty miles east of the course. The desert terrain is contrasted by the Verde River, which flows north to south through the reservation.
Rancho Mañana is one wild ride! Roller-coaster changes in elevation plunge you down into canyons and valleys and up into the hills as you soar from tee to green. In saying it’s popular with the locals, we also include the quails, hawks, coyotes, and even deer that are frequently seen on and around the course. The elevation changes breed great views of the mountains surrounding the area, where saguaro cactus forests seem to loom over your every shot. Players come back with tall tales of “true desert golf." Tucked away in the mountainous Cave Creek area, this course has spectacular views on almost every hole. Don’t let the shorter distance fool you. The exquisite Par 70 layout will challenge all levels of golfers, demanding finely tuned accuracy off the tee. Errant tee shots will certainly find its way into a desert filled with ocotillo, saguaro, ironwood, palo verde and cholla. The greens are also challenging with severe slopes. You want to keep the ball below the hole to avoid downhill putts that may run pass the hole and off the green.
